CPL's Guardian Family Program
A Converse Premium Lab Guardian Family is a family that receives a top quality breeding puppy to become a member of their family. At eight weeks of age, this puppy will be go home to an approved Converse Premium Labs Guardian family as the family agrees to follow the conditions as written in our Converse Premium Labs Guardian Home Contract while it is in our breeding program. The Converse Premium Labs Guardian family will be compensated with each litter of puppies that the Converse Premium Labs Guardian Dog has. When the Converse Premium Labs Guardian Dog is retired from breeding (after a maximum of 4 litters or 6 years of age), the dog would be spayed/neutered and the total AKC Registration and ownership is transferred to the Converse Premium Labs Guardian family where the dog will remain with it's family forever!
Requirements of a Converse Premium Labs Guardian Home:
- The CPL Guardian Family will pay the initial price of the puppy to begin the program. Upon the certification of the puppy through the genetic testing, PennHip and OFA testing the CPL Guardian family will be reimbursed the purchase price of the puppy.
- Each CPL Guardian Home dog will undergo genetic testing, PennHip, OFA Hip and OFA elbow testing at 14 months of age. All tests must have positive results for the dog to begin in the breeding program.
- CPL is financially responsible for the following:
- OFA and/or PennHip Tests (Click on photo for an informational video)
- Genetic Testing
- Any complications/vet visits that might arise during whelping
- CPL Guardian families are financially responsible for the normal care of the puppy while in their care including yearly vet checks, food and monthly parasite treatments (heart-worm, flea and tick)
- CPL Guardian Families will receive one of following options of their choosing with each litter their CPL Guardian dog has:
- Compensation for the price of a puppy (cash or check)
- A puppy from the litter
- (if the litter is 3 puppies or less, the family will receive compensation of half of the price of a puppy)
- CPL Guardian family will be reimbursed the initial purchase price of the CPL Guardian home dog at the successful completion of the contract time period.
- Our CPL Guardian Families will live within 4 hours-300 miles from Converse Premium Labs. (Greater distance with CPL approval)
- The CPL Guardian Home female will have a maximum of 4 litters in the program. The CPL Guardian dog will be checked by the CPL Veterinarian to determine if she is a candidate to continue in the program after each pregnancy. On average Labrador Retrievers come into heat every 6-9 months. It is CPL’s discretion on when she will be bred, however we will be respectful & mindful of the family’s plans.
- When the CPL Guardian family needs to board the CPL Guardian Home Dog the dog will be boarded at CPL Red Barn Kennel or an approved facility by CPL.
- The CPL Guardian Family is required to keep careful track of their female’s heat cycles and notify CPL of them. No worries if you’ve never had a female in heat before – we can help you to understand what this will look like!
- Your female will come to CPL within the first few days she begins bleeding and will stay with us for approximately 10 days. She will then go back home with her family during the remainder of her pregnancy (we will provide you with information on activity levels, what to expect, etc. during her pregnancy!). She will then return to CPL 5-7 days prior to her “due date” and stay with us until she has weaned her puppies (usually around 5 weeks old). We will work with the CPL Guardian Family on transportation to and from CPL at the time of breeding and whelping.
- CPL will provide access to a camera so that the CPL Guardian Family is able to watch their dog whelp and care for her puppies!
- It is strictly prohibited that an intact male dog of any breed lives in the same household as a CPL Guardian Family with the intact CPL female.
- CPL owns the dog while it is still of breeding age. Once the dog is done being bred, the AKC ownership will transfer to the CPL Guardian Family. We will not require that your dog be spayed/neutered once finished breeding; this is up to the family.
- The CPL Guardian Family is expected to cover all basic dog-related expenses. They are expected to do basic obedience training, potty training, keep the dog in their home, make sure the puppy is well-socialized, well-exercised, and keep the dog current on routine veterinary care.
- The CPL Guardian Family will use Purina Pro Plan Puppy Shredded Blend Chicken & Rice Formula with Probiotics Dry Dog Food until the puppy is at least 2 years old and during pregnancy. While not expecting the dog may be transitioned over to Purina ProPlan 30/20 to stay consistent to what they will be fed will in the care of CPL.
- CPL will provide the Guardian Family all supplements needed for the whelping season.
